T-Shirt Facts: The T-shirt got it's name because of the shape of the garment's outline, shaped like a T! It evolved from undergarments used in the 19th century, when the one-piece Union Suit (Long Johns) underwear was cut into separate top and bottom garments, with the top long enough to tuck under the waistband of the bottoms.

With and without buttons, T-shirts were adopted by miners and stevedores during the late 1800s as a convenient shirt in hot climates.

T-shirts became popular in the United States when they were issued by the U.S. Navy during and following the Spanish American War. The crew-necked, short-sleeved, white cotton undershirts, were worn under the uniforms. In tropical climates, it became common for sailors to remove their uniform jackets, wearing and getting dirty only their undershirts, a.k.a, T Shirts! If only they had had bamboo t shirts, the sailors might have stayed even cooler and drier!!
